David Marshall Gloves Arrive in Tennent’s Visitor Centre

Scottish football fans will soon be able to raise a pint to David Marshall, in honour of the penalty save against Serbia that sent the nation on the way to a first major men’s tournament in 23 years, when his match-worn gloves go on display at the Tennent’s visitor centre in Glasgow.

The gloves will form part of a display at the Tennent’s Story, tracking the history of the brand and its partnerships. After a trip to the centre fans can visit the on-site bar where they’ll be able to toast an iconic sporting moment, with an iconic pint of unpasteurised tank Tennent’s Lager – made in the brewery just a few feet away.

The installation marks a new partnership between Tennent’s Lager and the Scottish FA, with the deal announced as Steve Clarke’s squad begins its qualification campaign for the 2022 World Cup with matches against Austria, Israel, and the Faroe Islands.

As the original supporter of Scottish football, the relationship between Scotland’s favourite lager and the Scottish FA dates back to the 1974 World Cup in West Germany. The new partnership will see Tennent’s support the Scotland Men’s and Women’s National Teams, with the immediate prospect of hosting matches at Hampden during EURO 2020.

This summer’s tournament will also coincide with the projected re-opening of Scotland’s pubs following the disruption of Covid-19, with fans set to come together once more to cheer on the national team on the international stage.

Tennent’s Senior Brand Manager, Cameron Matthews, said: “When David saved that final penalty in Belgrade we know a few cans of Tennent’s Lager will have been raised in his honour, but we wanted to go one step further and give fans the chance to toast an iconic piece of Scottish football history – his match gloves. Visitors to our home at Wellpark Brewery will soon have the chance to raise a pint and reflect on the moment that has taken us to our first major men’s tournament in 23 years.

“As the original supporter of Scottish football our relationship with the Scottish FA goes back to 1974, and we’ve lived every moment since then shoulder to shoulder with the tartan army. From the highs of EURO 2020 qualification and the women’s national team campaigns in 2017 and 2019; to all the near-misses and everything in between, we know what it means to be a Scottish football fan and we’re proud to be backing our national teams officially once again.”

David Marshall said: “All the players know what it means to the nation to have qualified for EURO 2020, and I’m really proud of the part I played in the team’s success. For me, the gloves I wore that night will always be a reminder of that final penalty – and let’s not forget the VAR check afterwards – and I’m excited that I’m able to share that with the fans through the installation at the Tennent’s visitor centre. Let’s hope we have some more special artefacts to add before the summer is out.”

Scottish FA Commercial Director Chris Rawlings said: “Tennent’s have long been synonymous with Scottish football and in particular with the national teams, so to have them back on board officially is like welcoming home an old friend. The success of our men’s and women’s national teams in qualifying for major tournaments recently has given the nation a real boost and it is only fitting that Tennent’s are able to proudly display the gloves that played a part in such an iconic moment for all fans to admire.
